The Bangor, Maine Police Department requested training by the LEAD National Support Bureau. The requestor withdrew the request.
Our local LEAD program in Bangor, Maine has very few officers engaged with the program. One-fourth of the Bangor Police department is trained to make referrals to our LEAD program; this has happened over a time frame of 20 months and two separate training's, increasing the number of trained officers from 11 to 20. To date, less than half of the trained officers are actively making referrals to the program and the Health Equity Alliance has not received a police diversion since October of 2018. We have made efforts to encourage engagement by sending monthly emails to all trained LEAD officers within department, providing friendly reminders of how to contact the LEAD case manager with any questions, what some examples of arrest and social contact diversions may be, invitation to the monthly Law Enforcement Collaborative calls, as well as any information or articles that may be of interest to them and relevant to LEAD and/or diversion work. We have also made ourselves available at the police department by offering our time to answer questions or to have discussions around LEAD, opioid use, and any concerns of theirs regarding people who use drugs in our community. We have little to no feedback when these efforts are made. I am requesting assistance for technical/training support to help encourage engagement of LEAD with our local police department.
