This event will assemble leading experts in court-based responses to the opioid epidemic, including justice system practitioners, treatment experts, researchers, technical assistance providers, and federal agency representatives. The participants will explore innovative approaches from around the country, identify the unique treatment and other needs of individuals with opioid use disorders, and develop preliminary recommended practices for opioid courts and other court-based approaches nationwide.

On March 29, Center staff Aaron Arnold, David Lucas, Kelly Van Develde, and Sheila McCarthy hold a two-day roundtable at the Bureau of Justice Assistance's headquarters in Washington , D.C. The roundtable was attended by nearly 30 justice system practitioners, treatment experts, researchers, technical assistance providers, and federal agency representatives. The roundtable sought to explore innovative approaches to the opioid-epidemic from throughout the nation as well as to develop recommendations for opioid-courts nationwide. Representatives from six opioid courts and opioid-diversion programs around the nation attended the roundtable to inform discussions.

On April 15, Center staff and members of the roundtable held a follow-up conference call to further discuss drafting a monograph that will provide drug court practitioners nationwide with recommendations on how to develop opioid courts, in particular what language should be used to refer to the model.
On May 21, Center staff and several roundtable attendees held a conference call to further discuss the particulars surround the national recommended practices. This conversation continued to discuss guidelines, a working definition, key practices and stakeholders.
On June 14, Center staff held a final call with members of the roundtable to discuss critiques and edits to the final draft of the "Ten Elements of an Opioid Intervention Courts" after Center staff Aaron Arnold distributed the draft to roundtable members for review.
