Center staff drafted and submitted a conference request to DOJ, including gathering RFPs from hotels, creating a budget, and exploring appropriate faculty members. Host cities under consideration for the national conference include: New York, NY; Seattle, WA; and Los Angeles, CA. All sites have active community justice efforts underway.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a revised proposal to host a virtual conference has been submitted to BJA and has received preliminary approval. Center staff work to submit a revised conference request to DOJ reflective of this new scope and conference platform.
Center staff brainstorm topics and faculty for the conference agenda, including ideas like effective practices to reduce recidivism; addressing challenges at the nexus of homelessness and justice system involvement; building effective community partnerships; incorporating restorative justice into court programs; lessons learned from planning community courts; effective justice system responses to substance use disorder; and the future of community justice. The agenda will be finalized in collaboration with BJA.
Center staff was notified that the virtual conference did not require formal conference request approval. The request was withdrawn from the BJA database and Center staff were able to proceed with planning.
Center staff select, invite and coordinate faculty to attend as subject matter experts on topics including: incorporating restorative justice in court programs; community court planning; responding to homelessness; substance use disorder, and more. The final conference agenda is available at
