We would like to offer an in-person training on desistance from crime. Our department may partner with the University of Montana to offer this training, and offer the training to both academics, local criminal justice professionals, and policy makers.

Description of the Problem

Our department is evaluating the county's current pretrial supervision practice and procedures, and is developing reentry programs to support defendants and reduce recidivism. The Montana Department of Corrections has appointed a new director and there is work underway to redefine the way our state measures recidivism. We feel this is an excellent opportunity to introduce and share the concept of desistance from crime to both state and local leaders.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
We would like to offer a training on desistance which might impact pre- and post-disposition supervision practices, revocation metrics, and sentencing. We feel that teaching this concept to a broad audience may shift the way recidivism is measured by the state and offer better insight into effective reentry and reintegration services. Greater understanding of desistance may lend judges insight on criminogenic factors and impact sentencing on both new charges and on revocations. Locally, we hope that education on desistance influences Probation & Parole and Pretrial Supervision Officer's approach to case management and referrals.
