The application seeks assistance with:
1. Training on attorney conducted voir dire (ACVD).
2. Share training across stakeholder groups to develop common values, goals, and identify key areas for consideration in utilizing ACVD.
3. Individual, peer-led stakeholder trainings for judges, court administrators, prosecutors, and defense lawyers on ACVD.
4. Development of data collection infrastructure to examine qualitative and quantitative measurements of impact of any changes in jury practices implemented, with considerations for both impacts on system stakeholders and juror experiences.
January-June 2022: Received approval to begin providing TTA. Attended a training for judges in New Jersey on May 4th 2022 to introduce core concepts around ACVD.
July-December 2022: NCSC Identified speakers for judicial trainings on attorney-conducted voir dire in NJ pilot counties. July 26, 27 & 28: provided subject matter expert assistance to training events hosted by the NJ Judiciary for judges in each of the ACVD pilot sites (Camden, Middlesex, and Bergen Counties). JFA sent a prosecutor and defense lawyer to each training to conduct a mock voir dire and participate in a discussion on the use of ACVD.
August 16, 17, 18: provided peer subject matter expert assistance to support an in-office brainstorming and practice session for defense lawyers in Camden, Middlesex, and Bergen Counties. The events were hosted by the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender and were informal discussion groups helping lawyers brainstorm and conduct mock voir dire for up coming cases. Provided subject matter experts from Washington State to participate in a virtual program on the implementation of rules designed to address racial bias in the exercise of peremptory strikes.
