On June 28, 2022 Michelle Demmert co-presented with TLPI Consultant Virginia Davis and TLPI staff Kelly Stoner on the plenary session - Legislative Update: An Overview of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2022 (VAWA) Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction.
This session will provide an overview of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization bill (VAWA) 2022 Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction. Presenters will discuss the VAWA 2013 and 2022 Tribal Jurisdiction Provisions. They will discuss the impacts of these changes on tribal justice systems and specific implications for Alaska. They will also provide information about the Inter-Tribal Working Group and resources available to tribes interested in exercising Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction.
