The RVCRI team will fund RVCRI team members and Frederick, CO RVCRI grantee representatives to present at the IACP 2024 Conference.

Violent crime continues to be a challenge in many small and rural communities. Community-based resources are often scarce and, when available, only at a significant distance. As a result, law enforcement agencies acting alone may experience challenges to successfully address violent crime in their community. What partnerships and resources are most appropriate to address violent crime? How can a small investment result in big returns for your community? Hear from two departments and their
community partners about their efforts to address rural violent crime challenges by using innovative strategies supported by the development of robust cross-sector partnerships. As a result of this work, the Frederick, CO Police Department has provided services to 236 crime victims from April – December 2023 and the Vernon County, WI Sheriff’s Office has trained eight community volunteers, served 21 victims, and conducted 11 batterers assessments.

Both the Vernon County (WI) and Frederick (CO) sites will discuss the significant impact of receiving a Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (RVCRI) grant, including training and technical assistance; increased coordination and cooperation among local partners; implementation setup; the development of a tailored violence reduction plan; and program evaluation and reporting. Recommendations will be shared for departments seeking to develop similar community-based partnerships and related programming in their jurisdictions.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
o Describe why police departments should consider partnership opportunities to help address crime challenges in their jurisdiction.
o Describe how various criminal justice components can work together to provide holistic services to victims of crime.
o Explain the value that cross-sector partnerships can provide to departments from both a violent crime reduction and community trust perspective.
