This session provided attendees with strategies to engage family members beyond the person experiencing incarceration to set the stage for successful reentry. Individuals do not exist in isolation, whether they are a parent, child, sibling, aunt or uncle, grandparent, or other family member of origin or choice. Grantees can collaborate effectively with community partners to treat the whole family, allowing families to break the intergenerational cycles of trauma that often result in criminogenic behaviors, substance use, child abuse, and neglect. This collaboration paves the way for building recovery capital, which promotes healthy, stable home environments where children can thrive. Recovery capital is the depth and scope of internal and external resources available to support recovery and sustain wellness from a substance use disorder. Attendees learned about key strategies for implementing a culturally responsive, family-centered approach, with a particular focus on reviewing and using data, individual and family screening and assessment, and enhanced cross-system collaboration (including with child welfare, foster care, substance use and mental health agencies). Presenters explained abstract concepts in the context of practical, concrete strategies, illustrating how professionals can apply these principles in any system to improve reentry and other outcomes for families and our communities.
