The Detroit, Michigan Violence Reduction Network Site (VRN) site requested continued support for the Michigan State University (MSU) School of Criminal Justice, Crime Analysis Field Placement Program. MSU student analysts were placed in the Detroit Police Department (PD) Gang Intelligence Unit, Detroit PD and Michigan Department of Corrections Gang Intelligence Unit, Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Detroit Public Schools Police. Over the course of 8.5 months, the analysts developed a gang database and added data to the database, conducted social network analyses on approximately 6,500 individuals, developed a mobile app to provide officers access to the gang database, and developed a data system to store and analyze disciplinary records from Detroit Public Schools.
The Detroit VRN site requests continued assistance through the Michigan State University (MSU) School of Criminal Justice, Crime Analysis Field Placement Program. This collaboration expands the analytical capacity of the Detroit, Michigan Police Department (PD), Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office (WCPO), Detroit Public Schools Police (DPSP), and Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and supports the coordination of a number of federally supported initiatives to combat youth and violent crime in the City of Detroit. The analytical support, training, and tools provided by MSU will allow the participating agencies to conduct proactive and coordinated crime prevention and control.
