During the July - December 2018 reporting period, IIR in consultation with BJA, developed the program agenda, show flow, and other symposium materials; identified and prepped speakers; coordinated with the hotel, regional USAO, and local law enforcement; and planned out all participant logistics. The 2018 PSP Symposium was held on September 24-26. The 2018 PSP Symposium on Violent Crime took place in Birmingham, Alabama on September 24-26, 2018. The Symposium convened approximately 280 representatives from the PSP Operations and Diagnostic sites, including state and local law enforcement, prosecutorial, corrections, and community partners, and representatives from the major components of DOJ, such as ATF, the COPS Office, DEA, EOUSA, the FBI, OJP, OVW, and USMS. Then-Attorney General Sessions delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony, where he highlighted DOJ’s commitment to PSP and the successful work that PSP is accomplishing in the field. The PSP Symposium featured a customized and strategic agenda for the participating sites to engage and collaborate with subject experts and network among peers based on the identified public safety and violence reduction priorities facing each community. The sessions presented to the sites served as samples of future TTA that could be delivered to the sites as part of the PSP approach. IIR, in coordination with BJA and CNA, provided extensive on-site management and support of the 2018 PSP Symposium, including participant check-in and registration, hosting of a pre-symposium team briefing, coordination of speakers during the opening ceremony, liaison with the subject experts to provide logistical assistance, staff support to each PSP site to provide assistance as needed, and responsibility for the overall event. IIR developed the PSP Symposium App for mobile devices to provide the agenda, event details (including location, check-in information, event and hotel parking instructions, airport and local transportation information, and local restaurants), speaker bios and schedules, and a real-time announcement feature used to communicate with attendees, as needed. IIR updated the app in real time to remain consistent with agenda updates and speaker bio information. IIR provided the technical resources required to develop, implement, and manage the customized app.
After the event, IIR conducted post-event evaluations and created a report detailing all participant and speaker feedback.
During the January - June 2018 reporting period, the Symposium was officially approved by DOJ's Justice Management Division on 6/22. IIR performed minimal enhancements to the existing symposium website to open registration and began initial outreach to sites that will be attending.
During the reporting period of July-December 2017: In preparation for the 2018 PSP Summit and in consultation with BJA, IIR conducted extensive exploration of city and venue options to accommodate the requested time frame of September and estimated number of participants for the multiday event. Consideration was given to potential site location, cost, accessibility, local transportation, number and size of meeting rooms, access to area restaurants, and more. After extensive consideration, Birmingham, Alabama, a PSP site, was selected to hold the summit. IIR worked with the selected venue and BJA to secure and confirm the dates of September 24–26 for the PSP Summit. IIR, in coordination with BJA, is working to revise and review the Event Approval Form for submission to DOJ.
