Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice that fosters change by using person-centered communication. This webinar will provide both an introduction for RSAT staff new to the practice of MI and as a refresher for those already familiar with the technique. Motivational Interviewing trainer Roberta Churchill will provide a brief overview of the Spirit of MI specifically for the correctional setting.

Evidence based practices in corrections are those practices supported and validated by the research that are strongly linked to reducing recidivism and improved outcomes for clients, as well as enhancing community safety. Case planning is focused on integrating court orders with an assessment process, as well as assessing a client’s stage of change to focus supervision activities on criminogenic needs related to recidivism.

The Pima County, Arizona Sheriff's Department Corrections Bureau requested information on motivational interviewing training. BJA NTTAC provided the requestor with resources from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) and also referred the requestor to Jim Carter, a provider who conducts training around this topic.
