NJC will select an Advisory Committee of 12 – 15 national experts to guide the project.
This webinar is intended for justice system actors and others looking to learn about restorative justice principles and their relevant applications for judges. Current and former seated judges will share their experiences implementing restorative justice practices in their role and the effectiveness within the criminal legal system. Panelists will also share challenges and recommendations for system implementation.
Center staff provide on-going technical assistance for Nuevos Destinos Program (SFCJC), which includes regular phone calls (approximately 1-2 times/month), regular email communication, supplying planning guides and other resources, and connecting local stakeholders to subject matter experts. Over the course of the grant, the Center will assist the site to engage a community court steering committee; conduct a community needs assessment; develop policies and procedures; implement a risk-needs tool; launch the project; and collect and review performance data.
On 05/12/2023 NJC staff and SME contractors provided onsite training and technical assistance for the Intertribal Court of Southern California in Rincon, CA.
From 05/03 through 05/04/2023, NJC staff and SMEs planned, attended and presented at the American Indian Justice Conference, presenting a conference workshop and networked with tribal and non-tribal judges to explain resources and TTA provided by NTJC.
From 04/17 through 04/18, 2023 – NJC staff attended the Federal Bar Association, Indian Law Section Annual Conference, Albuquerque, NM. NJC staff networked with tribal judges, elected officials, and Indian law attorneys to explain resources and TTA provided by NTJC.
On 03/23/2023 NJC staff provided office-based TA via telephone regarding appellate skills training to Blackfeet Tribal Appellate Court.
The emerging issues conference will provide tribal justice system officials with recent legal updates impacting tribal courts and tribal justice systems and strategies to improve tribal court operations within tribal justice systems. Some of the topics that will be addressed at this conference will include:
• Impact of Haaland v Brackeen on tribal courts and tribal justice systems.
• Criminal jurisdiction updates to include and examination of Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta and United States v. Cooley.
• Separation of powers for tribal justice systems.

This conference aims to bring together seasoned and not-so-seasoned legal professionals, law enforcement officers, and experts in the field to share insights, exchange knowledge, and discuss model practices in prosecuting and investigating homicide cases.
This webinar and accompanying checklist will provide the prosecutors the tools to examine ethical issues in capital punishment cases. It will describe ways to ethically preserve and protect victim rights while prosecuting a capital punishment case. Model practice recommends considering surviving victims' rights without sacrificing a prosecutor's obligations when trying a death penalty case.
