IIR attended the National Association of Field Training Officers (NAFTO) 2022 National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. On June 9, 2022, IIR kicked off the FTO community of practice with a focus group of approximately 60 FTOs from around the country. Chief John Bouthillette (Retired) from IIR led the discussion along with the NAFTO Executive Director, Sergeant Dan Greene (Chandler, Arizona, Police Department). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss topics specific to the day-to-day responsibilities of law enforcement field training and to give participants the opportunity to share practices, successes, and challenges among themselves. As a result, areas of improvement with respect to OSW within field training programs were identified. The direction of the focus group was guided by the following questions:
• How do we define “officer safety”?
• How do we define “officer wellness”?
• How are officer safety and wellness connected?
• What role do FTOs play in enhancing OSW?
o How is this role defined, formally or informally?
o What are FTOs doing now?
o What needs to be done to move this practice forward?
• How do you ensure that OSW concepts are promoted during the FTO program?
