Public Defense

As a result of COVID-19, most jurisdictions in the country quickly moved court and court-related communications from in-person to audio- and video-technology without fully examining the impact of these technologies on the parties or the core purposes of the court process.

Provide scholarship support to indigent defense providers (public defenders and private assigned counsel) to attend NACDL's 2017 Making the Case for Life seminar in Memphis, TN on September 13-15, 2017.

NACDL is in the process of creating a webinar about facial recognition software – the way it is used by law enforcement, its potential for racial bias, and defenses that might be raised against its use and admission in trial. Currently, NACDL has confirmed Clare Garvie, an associate with Georgetown’s Center for Privacy and Technology, as a speaker for the webinar.

Last year, NACDL released its first report on South Carolina's summary courts, Summary Injustice: A Look at Constitutional Deficiencies in South Carolina's Summary Courts. This first report was a joint project with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of South Carolina. Then, earlier this year, NACDL released its second report on South Carolina's summary courts, Rush to Judgment: How South Carolina's Summary Courts Fail to Protect Constitutional Rights.

Provide scholarship support to indigent defense providers (public defenders and private assigned counsel) to attend NACDL's 2018 Georgia Capital Defense Conference held on May 21-23, 2018 in Savannah, GA.

Provide scholarship support to indigent defense providers (public defenders and private assigned counsel) to attend 2018 National Criminal Defense College's Trial Practice Institute - two sessions: June 17-30, 2018 and July 15-28, 2018, in Macon, GA

Provide scholarship support to indigent defense providers (public defenders and private assigned counsel) to attend NACDL's 2018 West Coast White Collar Conference taking place on June 20-22, 2018 in Santa Monica, CA

Provide scholarship support to indigent defense providers (public defenders and private assigned counsel) to attend NACDL's 2018 Making Sense of Science Seminar taking place on May 9-11, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV.
