NCJTC has been participating in collaborative calls with IIR focused on increasing awareness of overdose fatality reviews (OFRs) among tribal communities and making connections with the Arizona Department of Health Services regarding the upcoming Arizona Tribal Opioid and Substance Use Summit. Based on these collaborative calls and the tribal opioid summit opportunity, NJCTC proposes providing faculty to co-present a panel session regarding OFRs and considerations for implementing OFRs in tribal communities or OFR partnerships with local, county and state-based OFRs.

According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health Tables, twice as many American Indians and Alaska Natives require treatment for addiction compared to any other racial and ethnic group.

This course aims to enhance cultural competency and foster positive relationships with Indigenous communities and the importance of cultural competency in lawyering and policing. Participants will learn about the intersection of culture and community engagement, historical context, and building cultural awareness through self-reflection and bias awareness. Through practical application, participants will use dialogue and collaboration to build trust, accountability, acknowledge historical injustices, and develop ongoing cultural competency.
