Annual Poverty Research and Policy Forum – Human Services Programs and the Opioid Crisis

The current opioid epidemic has devastated families and communities and shattered lives. While the human toll of the opioid crisis is well established, its adverse effects on the goals of human services programs such as family stability, child well-being, and self-sufficiency are less well understood. Human services programs provide essential services to families and individuals who are struggling with opioid and other substance use disorders.

From April 23-24, 2019, CCI and ISLG staff hosted "Moving From Implementation to Sustainability" an all sites convening for Price of Justice Initiative grantees at the Office of Justice Programs in Washington, D.C.

Building off the 2018 Price of Justice All-Sites Convening: Where the Rubber Meets the Road, this two-day convening provided grantees with the opportunity to share best practices, innovations, and lessons learned, as well as to connect with colleagues from all five Price of Justice states: California, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, and Washington.

On April 9–10, 2019, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and CNA, with Arizona State University and Justice and Security Strategies, convened the Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) National Meeting in Arlington, Virginia. This meeting provided a forum to discuss important considerations related to BWC program and policy implementation, such as procurement, program costs, digital evidence management and integration, prosecutorial collaboration, strategic communication, policy compliance, emerging training practices, and technological issues.

CNA leadership assits BJA and IIR in 2019 PSP Symposium planning activities (e.g., participating in planning meetings and conference calls, reviewing summit materials, developing SSL Symposium guidance). During the Symposium, CNA will provide SSLS, staff, and analysts to support breakout sessions and note taking. After the Symposium, CNA developed a summary of takeaways for the BJA PSP team.

Collaborate with BJA and DOJ to plan the 2020 National PSN Conference to be held in Dallas, Texas, from April 14-16, 2020. Per BJA request, the Department of Justice is now coordinating conference planning.

The 4th Annual National SAKI Grantees Meeting was hosted June 6–7 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. Each SAKI grantee was able to send up to three representatives to this year’s meeting. In addition, all non-SAKI and non-DANY jurisdictions interested in sexual assault response reform were each invited to send two individuals to the meeting. This year, abstracts submitted by SAKI sites for peer-to-peer presentation sessions were implemented for the first time.
