Trish Thackston, BJA Policy Advisor, reached out to TLPI to provide speaker support for a symposium coordinated by the Oklahoma Supreme Court and the Sovereignty Symposium, Inc. The event is titled “The Sovereignty Symposium XXXIV”. The Sovereignty Symposium XXXIV took place on June 8-9, 2022, at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Sovereignty Symposium was established to provide a forum in which ideas concerning common legal issues can be exchanged in a scholarly, non-adversarial environment.

On June 29, 2022 TLPI staff Kelly Stoner facilitated a panel workshop - "A Tribal Perspective on implementing the new Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 (VAWA 2022) – Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction." This panel presentation given by tribal representatives who have implemented Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction. Kelly will provide an overview of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 (VAWA 2022). The panelists will discuss the changes/additions made to the tribal provisions of VAWA 2013.

The Partners will refine the curriculum for the proposed TPA based on BJA guidance and will solicit feedback from past TPA participants. The Partners will announce the academy dates electronically to probation, police, courts, and tribal leaders. A BJA approved participation application will be sent and reviewed with weight given to applicants who have one to three years of relevant experience; who have not previously attended the academy; who are from diverse tribes; who work within existing probation departments; and who are seeking to implement evidence based practices.

Tribal Probation Academy:
Build foundational skills through this comprehensive and interactive training academy. Examine traditional, evidence-based, victim-centered and trauma informed approaches to community supervision. Practice techniques in mock interviews, scenarios and team exercises. Explore the benefits of restorative practices and cultural resources.

On April 27 and 28, 2022, the project team held an in-person launch event with various stakeholders. The event was held in Los Angeles, CA and was hosted by the Los Angeles Police Department. Approximately 90 attendees came to the two-day event. The goal of the conference was to hear from various stakeholders in the field on how the Knowledge Lab could and should be used to address the current challenges in the field.
